Last spring break I went to visit my “Big” sister Becky in New Orleans. My mom and I enjoyed the warmer weather and unique atmosphere New Orleans offered. Besides the usual sites to be seen by tourists my mom and I went on a food tour. This bike tour took you all over the city to different restaurants to try all the classicfoods: gumbo, jambalaya, po’ boys and crawfish. Surprisingly I’m not a huge fan of the spices commonly found in Louisiana dishes. But I really enjoyed the crawfish.
The tour itself was ok. It was a lot longer that we had planned or wanted and we were so incredibly full after the first few stops. I was stuffed to the point of almost feeling sick. Besides the crawfish, my favorite food from NOLA is definitely the beignets. It’s deep fried dough deliciousness. It was nice to see my Big and get to spend some time with her. We of course hit Bourbon Street and managed to stumble our way back to our hotel. One more state to check off my list!
This January I went on my first “vacation” since entering the real world. Matt and I went to a cabin outside of Richland Center. Candlewood cabins are fantastic. Just what we needed to have a break from life. We had NO cell reception, which was kind of great. We just hung out, sat by the fire, and played some Uno. We also went for a little hike up one of the hills. Let’s just say we found out how out of shape we really are. But it was still a fun adventure. The best part was the tub. I got the joy of just sitting in this giant tub, soaking and drinking wine while Matt cooked me a steak dinner. Let’s just say life doesn’t get much better than that.
Last night Matt took me on the Best Valentine’s Date Ever!! We went to the Melting Pot (my favorite restaurant) and had a delicious dinner. We got all dolled up, Matthew in a bow tie and I borrowed a dress from my roommate. We went on Tuesday night, which was better in my opinion. It was quieter, not hectic and busy and our waiter was excellent, also on Valentine’s Day there is a set menu. This way we got to choose our courses. We ordered a bottle of wine (yea the whole bottle, because we roll like that), and enjoyed our scrumptious meal.
We each got a house salad.
For the Cheese we got the Quattro Formaggio – Butterkäse and Fontina cheeses with roasted garlic, basil and tomato pestos, mozzarella and Parmesan.
And for the main meal we each got the classic with the Mojo cooking style (my personal favorite). And of course we had to order extra mushrooms – Certified Angus Beef sirloin, Memphis-style BBQ pork medallion, Pacific white shrimp, herb-crusted all-natural breast of chicken and teriyaki-marinated sirloin.
Finally we were so full but there was the chocolate left. We each ordered a martini (because we had drank all of our wine). For the chocolate we got the Flaming Turtle – milk chocolate, caramel and candied pecans flambéed table-side.
All in all it was the perfect Valentine’s Date and we were SO full by the end of it.
My roommate Olivia and I tried out for a Milwaukee dance company called Femme Feroce. They perform at events and club openings. We haven’t actually taken a class or learned any choreography since last February when we were on the UW Oshkosh Hip Hop Team. This definitely fixed that dancing itch. The routine was to Dark Horse by Katy Perry (Olivia’s fave). The choreography was perfectly challenging with double pirouettes and C-jumps, which I haven’t done in years. All in all we had a fun evening getting to be able to dance again. Here’s the video of “behind the scenes” of the auditions. You can see Olivia in the end with the bright pink shirt!
